Close Fri 9 Oct. Low and easing: the market is pricing calm, ahead of Wednesday's CPI.cboe.comOpen source ↗
Put/call volume ratio, average of daily values, week 5–9 Oct vs 28 Sep–2 Oct. OCC cleared volume, all exchanges. Above 1 = more puts (hedging) than calls.
Crowded trades
- A December Fed hike treated as a done deal (about 80–88% priced). A cooler CPI would force a lot of positioning to unwind.
- 'Weak breadth under a record index' is the worry nearly everyone posts. When everyone points at the same flaw, it is often already priced.
- Volatility complacency: 1-day VIX near record lows even with CPI ahead.
- Gold's two one-sided camps: every one-sided gold account was bullish, while copy-pasted bearish trader posts peaked just before the bounce.
Top themes
- Record S&P 500 with 10-year yields around 5.3% and weak average stocks.
- Central bank gold buying (China's 23rd straight month) and record gold ETF inflows.
- Fed minutes and hawkish speakers versus weak September payrolls.
- Wednesday's CPI as the last big print before the 27–28 Oct FOMC.
- AI bubble talk: Burry's 'denial stage' post and Broadcom's CEO calling AI investors 'casino gamblers'.

Method and limits
Samples are small: X 255 scored posts (from 619 collected, about 6–13 Oct, mostly a watchlist of market accounts), Reddit 130 posts and top comments from five subreddits, YouTube 124 video titles. Reddit came from public RSS feeds, which carry no upvote counts, so posts are weighted by rank, not votes. YouTube is scored on titles only. Posts were classed by an AI reading each one, with only a light filter for obvious errors (none dropped); opinions are kept as posted. Trends values are relative, and small terms swing a lot.
Social mood is noisy and often contrarian. It is not a forecast and not a reliable indicator.
